Tax on winnings, and why residence decides it

Somali income tax law contains no provision that addresses winnings from betting, so there is no rate to quote you. What decides your position is the country you are tax resident in, and for many readers here that is not Somalia.

    The Somali position

Federal income tax runs in bands up to a top rate of 18%, though the band thresholds are reported inconsistently across sources. None of those bands names winnings from betting as a category.

Collection is thin. Somalia's tax take has been measured at between 2% and 4.9% of GDP, and more than 80% of employment is informal, so most income never touches a return in the first place.

No provision does not mean a settled answer. It means there is no published rule, and the absence of one is not a ruling in your favour. Take advice from a qualified tax adviser rather than treating silence as permission.

    Somaliland is a separate regime

Somaliland administers its own tax law under the Revenue Act 2016, which applies a flat rate of 10% rather than the federal bands. If you are in Hargeisa or Berbera, the federal figures above are not the ones that apply to you.

If you live abroad, your country decides

This is the part that matters for most readers of this page. Tax on gambling winnings is set by residence, not by where the operator is licensed.

    • Rules differ sharply between the UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, Kenya and the Gulf states.
    • Several of those countries also require you to use a locally licensed operator, which is a separate question from tax and is covered on the Somalis abroad page.
    • Where winnings are taxable, the obligation is usually yours to declare, not the operator's to withhold.

Ask a qualified adviser in the country where you are resident. A general page cannot give you an answer that is safe to rely on, and getting this wrong is expensive.

    What to keep

    1. A record of deposits and withdrawals by date, with the amounts in the currency you actually converted to.
    2. The exchange rate you used at each conversion, because a USDT balance is not a fixed dollar figure.
    3. Operator statements, downloaded while the account is open. Closed accounts are hard to get records from.
Gambling Therapy is free and confidential, and reachable wherever you live.

Important. 18 plus. This page is general information about published tax regimes, not tax advice, and it is not a substitute for a qualified adviser.

    Questions readers ask

Do I pay tax on betting winnings in Somalia

Somali income tax law contains no provision covering winnings from betting, so there is no published rate. That is an absence of a rule rather than an exemption, and a qualified adviser is the right place to take it.

    Is Somaliland different

Yes. Somaliland administers its own regime under the Revenue Act 2016 at a flat 10%, rather than the federal bands that top out at 18%.

I live in the UK or Sweden. Which rules apply

Your country of residence decides, not the country the operator is licensed in. Ask an adviser where you live, and note that both countries also require operators to hold a local licence.

    What records should I keep

Deposits and withdrawals by date and amount, the exchange rate at each conversion, and operator statements downloaded while the account is still open.
